Candice Reyes, Guidance Counselor

Candice was raised in Brooklyn but has been living in the Bronx for the past 12 years. She has a problem with shopping, refuses to learn how to cook as long as she can order take out food, and hates exercise. Her biggest love of all is her 3 year old son, Jael.

Candice has taught in the Bronx Guild for 7 years and graduated 4 classes before transitioning into the Guidance Counselor position in 2011. She has a BA in English and Media Studies from Hunter College, an MST in Adolescent Education from Fordham University, and an MS in School Counseling from Hunter College. She is currently back at Hunter for a Bilingual Extension in Pupil Personel Services.

I’m a coach who’s no joke, I’m a teacher not a preacher and I’m a man who understands.  I do what I do because I enjoy Math but more importantly, I love working with young adults.

I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the South Bronx. I graduated from Herbert H. Lehman H.S.,   received my Bachelor’s Degree from Manhattan College and my Master’s Degree from City College of NY.  I have been teaching for almost ten years and the majority of that time I spent here at The Bronx Guild H.S.  Prior to teaching, I had a few other odd jobs.  I had my own insurance business for a few years. I was an undercover police officer.  I worked in the music business.  I was in a boy band and a rodeo clown.

My hobbies include traveling and dining in different places around the world, spending time with my family, watching just about any sporting event with friends, playing poker, and long walks along the beach.

One of my goals is to visit every professional baseball stadium in the U.S. and Canada.

If there was one thing I would want people to know about me is that I believe life is short and you have to enjoy every minute.  I also believe a life without humor is not a life at all. Comedy makes the world go round. Well I know thats more than one thing, but I never said Math was my thing!

Sam Decker, Principal
I have been the principal of the Bronx Guild High School since 2007, and it is the best job in the world. I studied art (photography) at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, moved to New York to become a famous artist and instead got a Masters in English at City College and started my education career. I taught at City College for 13 years, as well as Manhattanville College and Yeshiva University. I switched to teaching High School at the French American School of New York, and then went to the NYC Leadership Academy to learn how to be a principal. I was an intern at the Bronx Guild for a year, and then the principal.

Before my career in education I was a bartender, waiter, restaurant cook, tugboat cook, popcorn salesman, egg inspector, security guard, maid, free lance photographer and sometimes journalist. For the past 20 years I have lived in Washington Heights, where I cook, take photos, read, walk my dogs and argue with my three children for fun.
